New Gateway Guardian Release

As I noted (a little bluntly, sorry about that) over at Dana's, Netmaster Merilus Netmaster has updated their software. It was release on January 5th but I only found out about it yesterday as I was emailing to find out the status of some business stuff with my old co-workers. Anyway, this updates a bunch of stuff in GGOS, updates to the latest 2.2 kernel, fixes some security holes, etc. Nothing really new in the CSM, updated some of the reserved address ranges, IP addresses can take an IP with 255 in them, and other little things. I did the update to my system (install new software, retrieve from device, update device) with no problems.

I finally retired mine when we moved into the house - since I needed to get a wireless hub anyways, I just got one with firewalling. Haven't looked back (though also haven't taken the card out of the machine yet) :)

The only real notable features I'm using are IPSec. I don't know of any off-the-shelf firewall (DLink/LinkSys/3com/etc) that handles multiple IPSec tunnels nicely.

There's so much running on the FC that I don't use... I routinely login and killall -9 boa iptraf getd etc

I guess if you need more advanced features, "build your own" is still the better route... and if you don't need what's there, then use something simple/cheap like Linksys/etc
