Quicktime under Linux Without Crossover

Just discovered today thanks to a post on the gentoo mailing list that there is a package called “mplayerplug-in” (not the best name IMHO). This plugin allows mpg/avi/mov playback (ie: the apple movie trailers page). Just run the following:

emerge mplayerplug-in

and wait for it to finish, then restart your mozilla/galeon/phoenix and ta-da! I just finished watching some trailers on the apple site, so I know it works well.

This means you no longer have to buy the crossover plugin to get quicktime. Now, the crossover plugin (which I did buy), still gives some added bonuses, but this is still a huge win for Linux, and something that hopefully will start being standard in distro installs.
