How I Deal with Cookies
I always have my cookie settings set to “ask”, and the “details” window (or “more info”) expanded so I can see now only what information is stored on my computer, but who is storing it. I follow the following rules:
- If my IP address (24.x.x.x) is anywhere in the cookie, Block
- If it’s any sort of “webtrends” type server, Block
- If it’s any sort of “ad” type server, Block
- If it’s a site that requires information for login like slashdot or kuro5hin, Allow
- If it’s saving information that I’d like to keep around, like the data for the comments on movabletype weblogs, at least on sites that I regularily go to, Allow
- If in doubt, Block
well ya made me go look at my cookies. I had it set to “allow from originating site only” (because “ask” was becoming too much effort) but I was amazed how many ad type cookies I had in there! So I went and deleted them all and now am back to “ask”
